NATURE
The district is situated in the picturesque area of the Meshchera lowlands. Most of its territory is flat, with small hills. The most of soil is sandy. The territory has sufficient humidity with rather warm summer and relatively mild but steady snow cover winter. The four seasons are nearly perfectly timed.
All rivers of the district are small. The water surface occupies 4669 hectares or 1,5 % of the total. The biggest reservoir occupies about 20 sq. km. The water is used for irrigation, water supply, fish industry and recreation. The fish industry ponds of the district are the biggest in The Russian Federation.
About 11,000 hectares of the area covered by the natural pit bogs that are considered to be natural shelters to many biological species. The region is a home to many mammals such as elk, fox, wild bore, hare, squirrel, raccoon, beaver, ermine, and marten. Sometimes the wolves and lynxes may bee seen. There are birds such as wood grouse, black grouse, and hazel hen. There are plenty of waterfowl on the lakes and ponds. 12 conservation areas occupy 5145 hectares. The colony of gray herons in Shalakhovo is the most well known of them.
